Dr. Koppiker is also an excellent educator and is fondly referred to as Father of Breast Oncoplasty in India. Dr. Koppiker established the International School of Oncoplastic Surgery (ISOS) in 2014, to fill the existing gaps in surgical training in the niche field of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. He has trained over 500 surgeons from India, Middle East, Indonesia, Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. He also incepted the first and only formal Breast Oncoplastic Surgery training program to India through his association with University of East Anglia, UK.

For his work, he has recently been conferred honorary Associate Professorship at University of East Anglia, UK and is also the Southeast Asia Regional Convenor of the Master’s program in Breast Oncoplasty, University of East Anglia (UEA), UK. Since 2017, 4 batches of students have successfully enrolled and are working towards a Master’s degree in Breast Oncoplasty.

He also serves as a board member on many international societies like Society of Oncoplastic Surgery (SOS), USA, Senology International Society (SIS), Brazil, to name a few.

He has also been appointed as the joint Editor in Chief of the Journal of Oncoplastic Surgery, U.S.A which is managed by the SOS, U.S.A.

Recently, he has established an online educational platform Breast Global. Breast Global is an effort to bridge the gaps in knowledge by providing a single platform where experts, trainees and industry can have access to a plethora of global learning and training opportunities.

Association with UEA

  • Collaborated with Prof. Jerome Pereira since 2014 for organizing Breast Oncoplasty training programs in India
  • Established International School of Oncoplastic Surgery (ISOS) in Pune in 2014 which is modelled according to UEA initiatives in Breast Oncoplasty
  • ISOS has organized 4 Masterclasses in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery for Asian breast surgeons in association with UEA since 2014.
  • Acquired expertise from UEA mentors in various advanced techniques such as Mastectomy with Immediate Reconstruction, Therapeutic Mammoplasty, Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy procedures and Sentinel Node Management.
  • Frequently invited many UEA faculty at various Breast Oncoplasty workshops in India to enhance the impact and profile of UEA-M.Ch. (Breast Oncoplasty) training program
  • Formally appointed as Regional Convenor of UEA-M.Ch. (Breast Oncoplasty) training program for the Asian sub-continent in 2017
  • Formally appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer by UEA in 2017
  • Frequently invited by UEA as an examiner for UEA-M.Ch.(Breast Oncoplasty) training program
  • Delivered lectures as visiting faculty at UEA on Breast Reconstruction and Therapeutic Mammoplasty
  • Plan to visit UEA atleast once or twice every year to deliver lectures and serve as examiner

M.Ch. (Breast Oncoplasty) Training Program in Association with UEA

  • Played a key role in establishing an M.Ch (Breast Oncoplasty) Program in association with UEA in 2017 for Asian countries.
  • A total of 56 students have enrolled into the program since 2017. Batch 1 commenced in 2017 and Batch 2 in 2019, respectively.
  • Outreach in most of the Asian countries has been successful. Students from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia and the Middle East. New strategies are being planned for further dissemination of the program in the aforementioned and new regions.
  • For the students enrolled in this program, didactic training is provided based on the UEA course module content.
  • To impart hands-on training for M.Ch. students enrolled in the Program, practical training workshops in Oncoplastic Surgery are conducted under the mentoring of breast surgeons from UEA networks

Establishing Oncoplastic Training in Asian Countries

  • Since 2015, many breast surgeons from Bangladesh have attended ISOS training programs in Pune
  • With inputs from ISOS, Bangladesh Cancer Society has now formally established The Bangladesh School of Oncoplasty in 2019.
  • ISOS team was invited to conduct a workshop in Oncoplastic Surgery at the Bangladesh Association of Cancer Surgeons in August 2019
  • Similar attempts are also in progress to take this program into Indonesia, Singapore and China
